Day 20 | The Exile
There are lots of things people are afraid of: bugs, clowns, elevators, all kinds of things! Me? I’m scared of bears. Always have been. Always will be. My fears came to visit me one night while hiking in the mountains. We had just finished a wonderful but tiring day of hiking, had eaten a good meal cooked over a fire, and I was nestled down sleeping like a baby until… I heard it. At first, I thought it might be a raccoon, but as it drew nearer and nearer it, sounded bigger and bigger! All I could think of was giant fangs and claws, and then the worst of all possible things happened. It sniffed me! As I screamed in my most manly voice possible, (like a little girl to hear others tell it), I saw it! But it wasn’t the huge killer I envisioned. Rather, it was a small bear, running away because I frightened it much more then it frightened me…well, maybe not! One thing is for sure, I will never forget that night.
Today, we learn about three other guys who had what was probably a scary time−Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These were three young men who were captured by King Nebuchadnezzar. While living in captivity, God blessed them, and they rose to high positions in the king’s court. Everything seemed to be working out, until the King decided that everyone needed to worship him. As we read in the passage, we see that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had to make a choice, either worship the king or be thrown in the fiery furnace! Way scarier than a little bear. So, what did they do? They were faithful to God and stood up to the king. The king was so angry. He had the furnace heated and, had them bound in ropes, and thrown into the furnace. Was it the end for our heroes? No, God protected them and the Bible says that their clothes didn’t even smell like smoke! Even in this scary situation, God was there with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave them strength to face their fears and stand up for Him.
God wants to do the same for us. No matter what scary thing we might be facing, God is right there beside us. He is faithful to give us the strength to be brave for Him and He is big enough to save us from all the scary things out there….even bears.
Memory Verse | Jeremiah 1:8
Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with thee to deliver thee.
Have you ever been really scared? Tell us about it.
Who is the bravest person you know?
How did God protect Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego?
How has God protected you or your family?
Thank you, God, for always walking with us and being faithful to protect us. Please let us be brave like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and have the courage to stand up for you.
