Don’t Be Deceived

Don’t Be Deceived

Proverbs 12:5

28 The plans of the righteous are just,

but the advice of the wicked is deceitful

Central Truth

Be wary of taking advice from anyone who does not operate under Christian principles.  Follow righteousness in all your endeavors.

Devotional

What kind of success does wickedness bring?  We have all known associates who cheated to pass an exam or perhaps to receive a larger tax refund.  We may have even been guilty of the same.  And what about the person who ignores his family commitments and mistreats his fellow employees to get ahead in business? These apparent successes are only temporary; they are bought at the expense of character, and those who hurt others become callous and cruel. In the long run, evil behavior does not lead to success; it leads only to more evil.  Real success maintains personal integrity. Honest people will treat you fairly; however, the wicked and dishonest only want to deceive you, and their advice is treacherous.

Throughout my career there have been faithful and godly men and women who have set a good example for me and have strived to live out their faith daily. I am so grateful for their guidance and influence.  But there have also been those who have taken advantage of the system and of others to profit through dishonesty and unfaithfulness to their coworkers and to their families. At times they have tried to win my trust and to convince me to do the same. There was even a time when I was forced to quit a job because God convicted me that what these coworkers and superiors was asking me to do was blatantly wrong and sinful. I praise God that he protected me from evil in this situation and that he provided for my family when I had no job. As a result, my family and I have been blessed tremendously because God used this situation to draw us closer to Him and to increase our faith.

Defective thinking results in destructive living. It is impossible to think wrongly and live righteously.

Evil hearts produce evil and deceitful thoughts, and all kinds of tragedy follows. “To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6).We gain wisdom only when Jesus Christ is at the very center of our hearts and minds. So be careful where you focus, or you may be lead into destruction.

Questions To Ponder

  • Why do you think the thoughts of the righteous are right and just?

  • What is the counsel from a wicked or evil person?

  • Which person would be the best to listen to for advice? (The righteous person or the evil person) and why?

  • When you give advice…. Is it from a heart that’s right with God or from a selfish heart?

“No human wisdom or understanding or plan

can stand against the Lord.

The horse is prepared for the day of battle,

but the victory belongs to the Lord.”
