Motivation for Riches Leads to Poverty
16 He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
As believers we should be focused on the Kingdom of GOD and serving others and not the promotion of ourselves. The desires to become wealthy at the expense of those less fortunate or trying to bribe our way into power and influence will only lead to poverty and destruction.
In today’s society the world seems to be captivated with wealth and the power or influence that comes along with it. This verse gives two examples of dishonest paths to get rich, one through oppressing the poor and the other by giving service to the rich in the hope of gaining favors from them. This is not the way the Lord has intended Christians to gain good standing in the world. The Lord has called us to be rich in Him (Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek: for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him).
I have been blessed to have the opportunities the Lord has given me, and the desire to be rich in love and kindness to everyone that I encounter. In all honesty I miss the mark many times and am not as loving and kind that I have been called to be. Thankfully I have His Word, prayer and fellowship with other believers to help me be more like Jesus.
Today how will you choose to be rich?
Questions To Ponder
What doesn’t seem to make sense in this verse?
In what way would one “come to poverty” by oppressing or giving?
Spend some time thinking of any ways you may have been oppressive or given in a way that would hurt you.

but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”
