The Hay Field of Life

The Hay Field of Life

Proverbs 14:18

18 Simpletons are clothed with foolishness,

but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

Central Truth

When we focus on God’s grace and instruction for us in his word, we become prudent and prepared, and much like in life, we receive better results.

Devotional

Growing up on a horse farm my Dad planted a lot of grass.  He worked hard to grow a certain type of grass, a good quality, and without weeds.  My Dad worked and worked on seeding, fertilizing, and watching the weather patterns to know when the best time was to cut the hay for the horses.  To say the least, he did not like weeds.  Weeds would just show up, they made the quality of his grass go down and hay with a lot of weeds was not worth as much money as hay without the weeds.  I always thought it was funny how he worked and worked to grow a specific grass and this weed could ruin his harvest.  The weed did not take any effort to grow, it had no real value, and just showed up, without effort.  The weeds were simple.

Much like the weed, sometimes people are simple.  We are simple when we don’t spend time in God’s word, share God’s word with our family, friends, and strangers. The verse talks about “the simple inherit folly” or foolishness, stupidity, and irresponsibility.

In contrast, “the prudent are crowned with knowledge” is a wonderful thought.  Being prudent or acting or showing care and thought for the future, is a wonderful thing.

Much like preparing a field to grow hay, my Dad worked very hard to monitor the soil, the fertilizer, and the growth of good grass.When he did things with focus, he generally received very good results.It takes no effort for weeds or simple things in our life to appear.As Christians, when we do not do anything we become very simple and receive folly or foolishness, stupidity, and irresponsible things.When we prepare and focus on what God has to say to us each day we are more prudent and focused and therefore receive knowledge.

Questions To Ponder

  • Are there weeds in your life?

  • Are you focused on what we need to be focused on?

Scripture Memory | February | Proverbs 18:2

“Fools have no interest in understanding;

they only want to air their own opinions.”

How do you prepare?
