The Spirit Realm is Real

The Spirit Realm is Real

Ephesians 2:1-3

2 …in which you previously walked according to the ways of the world, according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens, the spirit now working in the disobedient.

Central Truth

Under the spirit of Satan’s kingdom we used to act in disobedient ways we would not normally follow.

Devotional

When James Calvert journeyed out to the cannibal island of Fiji with the message of Jesus, the captain of the ship he was on tried to persuade him from going.  “You will risk your life and all those with you if you go among such savages,”  he said.  Calvert replied, “We died before we came here.”

The Bible teaches us that we have all died, spiritually; but God has given us a second chance.  While we “were all dead in our transgressions and sins” (vs 1), we may respond to His gift of life and receive new spiritual life.  Chapter 2 of Ephesians tells the story

In verse 2, Paul describes the way we lived while we were in this spiritually separated state.  We followed the ways of the world – we lived according to the non-Christian value system.  This system is created and energized by Satan (the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens).

But, this doesn’t mean that non-Christians realize that their values are created and energized by Satan -  “the god of this age has blinded the eyes of unbelievers…” (1 Cor 4:4).   In fact, most would probably deny it.  Still, Satan, in his craftiness, places the things in front of us that we, in our sinful condition, find attractive, and, therefore, pursue as though they were our ideas.

The spirit now working in the disobedient is not the ruler himself but a spirit (atmosphere) created and energized by the ruler.  Satan’s dark domain encourages us to have ungodly values, attitudes, and actions (Rom 13:12-13), much the same way a ‘spirit’ of enthusiasm at a ball game might energize us to embrace the attitudes and actions of a sports fan.  We cheer, yell, jump up and down, and otherwise act in ways that we would not if we were not under the influence of an enthusiastic ball game atmosphere.

There are spiritual powers at work all around us, and this verse is a great reminder to us all.  It is easy for me to get caught up in the routine of this world, to-do lists, entertainment and pleasures, and even good and religious things.  But, I can lose sight of spiritual realities that are the real undercurrents of life.

C.S. Lewis said it well in his book Mere Christianity, “It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at heaven, and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you will get neither.”

Questions To Ponder

  • What actions are described in Romans as how "the world" acts?

  • Who is referred to as the "prince of the power of the air"?

  • What do you think that term means?

“No human wisdom or understanding or plan

can stand against the Lord.

The horse is prepared for the day of battle,

but the victory belongs to the Lord.”
