 Proverbs 14:31

Central Truth

Be gracious and kind…Our kindness, generosity and love for our neighbors is the fruit of our eternal salvation we received as followers of Christ.

Devotional

The above four verses are dominated by the central theme of kindness and graciousness.  It is a basic biblical concept and easy to understand.

As my two children grew, I tried my best to reinforce kindness.  Be nice to everyone you meet, I would say.  People remember kind acts – a word, a pat on the back, a text, email or for you mature folks, a hand written note or letter.

Thinking about it, it’s quite easy to tell someone else to be nice, kind and generous.  But am I living the life that honors God….am I living out what I ask my children to do?

As Christians, we should show compassion and the fruits of the spirit to all.  It matters not if they are a fellow believer or not, man or woman, black or white, gay or straight, tall or short.  We are all made in the image of God.

When we display acts of kindness, may we give them with no strings attached.Don’t expect anything in return, make your acts of kindness a natural flow from the kindness you received when God sent his only son to die for you.Yes, the ultimate act of goodness, kindness, love came from our creator.

Questions To Ponder

  • If our aim, as Christians, is to follow Jesus, which of these characteristics should we expect to see in our lives?

  • Take some time to assess your life. Is generosity or cruelty the fruit of your life lately

  • What does the fruit of your life say about the root of your life? Are you planted in Jesus and following him? Are you seeking your own benefit more than those in need?

  • Spend time in prayer asking God to give you a heart of generosity that overflows from the generous love He has shown us in Jesus.
