Approaching God with Confidence

Approaching God with Confidence

Ephesians 3:12

12 Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.

Hebrews 4:16

16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Central Truth

Ephesians 3:12 and Hebrews 4:16 tell us God wants us to come to Him confidently through our faith in Him with all our requests-the big and the small ones. God desires to be merciful and gracious to us in our time of need.

I lived in an alcoholic home as a kid, and we had chaos EVERY day. Even as an unsaved kid, I always wanted my dad to be saved and to stop drinking. I remember standing in my shower as 12-year old with my head against the wall praying, “Lord, I am going to ask you one more time to please save my dad and help him stop drinking.” Even as I prayed, I really did not have the faith that God could do this, I had not learned what God can do.

At the age of 17 I left home to attend college at William Carey. My coach wanted me to attend Carey because he felt this would be a school where I would fit in and not get lost in the numbers. God had a different reason for me to be there, and I found out why my freshman year. I attended a Truth concert at school and accepted Christ as my Savior while at the concert. I actually saw some of my friends in another area of the auditorium move toward the counselors at the front but had no idea they were praying for me. The next day I found out friends were praying for me at the very time I was having my experience knowing I needed to accept HIM. They had gone to God boldly and with confidence.

But only through years of experiences, faith, and praying have I come to really understand the truth in these scriptures. As I look back on that day in the shower when I had no faith, I am ashamed because I feel like I was giving God an ultimatum.  I was also limiting God.  I have learned that God wants me to come confidently and boldly to Him with the big things and with the small things. We are not bothering him. I have also learned I can go to Him freely, not wondering if He is tired of my coming again and again to Him with the same prayer. He is always going to be merciful and gracious to me. So for years I continued praying for my father to be saved and to stop drinking.

I have learned God answers some prayers immediately as He did for my friends that night at the Truth concert. I have also learned He answers prayers years later. I remember getting the long-awaited phone call in November 1987 saying “Your Dad will be baptized this Sunday”. He also stopped drinking in 1988 and even became the song director at his church. He and the pastor and other musicians would perform at the nursing home once a week. WOW! Do you understand this is AMAZING BUSINESS?  That was an example to me that God hears all of our prayers and is gracious and merciful to us and can do anything.

Questions to Ponder

  • How could you use Ephesians 3:12 to explain the gospel?

  • It’s easy to feel hesitant in approaching God. According to these verses, what should give us confidence in approaching God?

  • How could you use these truths in your prayer life?

Scripture Memory | May | Ephesians 4:15
