Are You Grieving the Holy Spirit?
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirit cares about our daily life, our decisions, our actions.
Charles Spurgeon once said: “Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are ships without the wind, branches without sap, and like coals without fire, we are useless.”
The Holy Spirit is a light to us in three ways: by exposing our guilt, by illuminating the Word of God, and by showing us Christ. Or to put it another way, as The Divine Light the Holy Spirit works to reveal sin, reveal the truth and reveal glory. When we close our eyes to this light we are guilty of resisting the Spirit (Acts 7:51) or quenching the Spirit (1 Thess. 5:19)
We can relate this to a park ranger at Yellowstone National Park. He was leading a group of hikers to a fire lookout. The ranger was so intent on telling the hikers about the surroundings that he considered the messages on his two-way radio distracting, so he switched it off. As the group neared the tower, the ranger was met by an out-of-breath lookout, who asked why he hadn’t responded to the messages on his radio! A grizzly bear had been seen stalking the group, and the authorities were trying to warn them of the danger.
Anytime we tune out the Holy Spirit or ignore the warnings His gives we put ourselves and those around us in danger.
God gives us His Holy Spirit when we become one of His children. The Spirit will never force us-but wants us to lead us to a life of victory. The Bible makes it clear the Holy Spirit and the flesh are in total opposition to each other. So we cannot live according to our nature and at the same time obey the Spirit. So we grieve the Holy Spirit by not obeying Him.
God not only gives us His Holy Spirit but he also seals us with the Holy Spirit! Ephesians 1:13-14 tells us: “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession.”
How awesome that we have a guaranteed deposit for our inheritance!!Nothing like here on earth where we have to work to have anything deposited into our accounts, and is fleeting and gone just as quick as it came. But a guaranteed seal!So let us remember to first be aware of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives making sure we do not cause the Spirit grief by our actions. We are sealed by the Spirit and He will guide us day by day if we open up and allow Him.How will you respond to the Holy Spirit?
