Close Friends are a Treasure

Close Friends are a Treasure

Proverbs 27:10

10 Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, an do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.

Central Truth

Family is great, but the Lord places good friends in our lives for a reason.  Sometimes, friends can stick closer by your side than family.

Solomon used this proverb to help teach his son in his rule of the Israelites.  Solomon valued his father’s friend Hiram so much that he also maintained a close friendship with him.  He sought him for Godly counsel and wisdom.  His brother, Rehoboam, on the other hand, forsook the counsel his father’s older and wiser friends and followed his new friends.  This bad decision led to him losing 10 tribes at once. (II Samuel 5:11, I Kings 5:1-18)

A good friend can be hard to find, so when you find one treasure them.  According to scripture, it is very important to keep close friends, sometimes even above family.  It truly doesn’t get any better than a small group of loyal and dedicated friends.  It has been said that “blood is thicker than water”, but it is not thicker than godly character in Jesus Christ. “There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).  When hard times come in your life, as they certainly will, you need a real friend to stand beside you-- one that loves at all times and takes on your burden as their own (Proverbs 17:17).

Great friends are always there for one another, for lifting one another up, for accountability, for Godly wisdom, and for day to day life.  A cord of three strands is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).

Lastly, consider Jesus.  He loved his disciples, and they loved Him fiercely.  They believed in him more than his own brothers, and He found far more sympathy and loyalty from them than from his family (John 7:1-5, Luke 22:15).  Jesus knew His true friends were those who heard the word of the Father and followed His will (Matthew 12:46-50).

Oftentimes, a true friend does stick closer than a brother and is one of the greatest gifts the Lord chooses to give us.In your life, always remember to do two things:1) Keep your good friends close and treat them well. 2) Strive to always be this kind of Godly friend to others.
