Proverbs 11:14 & 14:43

11:43 Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

14:43 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

Central Truth

Believers are called to honor God with the decisions they make.

Take a moment and think back to some of the biggest decisions in your life that you have had to make.  Put your self back in your shoes and try to remember every aspect of that decision. Where were you? What was happening? What emotions were you experiencing? Did you handle it well? If you are anything like me, do you wish you had a “do over?” ok, maybe several “do overs?” If you think about it, life is full of decisions. What kind of job will I choose, where will I live, who will I marry, are all some of life’s “BIG” decisions. But if you really think about it, you make way more, WAY more. According to Leading Edge Journal produced by Roberts Wesleyan College, humans are capable of making around 35,000 decisions a day!

From what color shirt to wear to how to respond to the drive-thru clerk at McDonalds when they get our order wrong, it seems like we are constantly in a state of decision-making. And let’s face it, sometimes we just blow it.  Usually that happens when we make a decision in the heat of the moment based on our emotions rather than with wise counsel. Think about it. We are born sinners. We are natural bad decision makers.  Ever thought about rainbows and butterflies after stepping on a Lego in the middle of the night, yea, me either.  As a people and a nation it is easy for us to fall into sin.  That’s why God had to send us help!  Help from the Lord typically comes in three forms, His Word, and His Spirit, and His People.

God in His Word gives us guidance.  The Psalmist says in Psalms 119:105 that God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light to our path.  When we stray from God’s Word we stray from the only thing that can expose true danger.  The enemy lurks around every corner waiting for us to fall into his snares (usually they come in the form of a middle of the night Lego of sin). If you and I walk apart form God’s Word we are vulnerable to anything set before us.  Our first instinct should always be to turn to His Word!

God also sends us help by giving us His Spirit. The Spirit for us is a helper, guide, comforter, and so much more for us.  When we neglect the spirits conviction and prompts in our every day life we set ourselves up for failure. God has given to us the ultimate counselor in the form of His Spirit. As a child of God it should be our natural default to stop and consider the Spirits promptings!

Last but certainly not least is His People. In an “abundance” of counselors there is safety.  God has given us each other to help in times of need. I can’t begin to tell you how helpful it has been for me in my life to go to several godly men to seek out wisdom on a tough issue. 99% of the time I walk away wiser and with a different perspective (usually the right one) than I had initially.   God created us to walk in fellowship with each other as brothers and sisters in Christ so that we too can be a help for each other.

Questions To Ponder

  • How often does Gods Word impact what I do?

  • Do I really rely on the Holy Spirit to guide me in my everyday life? When was the last time he has done so?

  • Right now. Who are 5 men or women that I can go to for wise counsel?

Take some time to end your quiet time today in prayer for our nation!

but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”
