Do Our Friends Control Who We Are?

Do Our Friends Control Who We Are?

Ephesians 5:7-8

7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

I deal with teenagers every day. I am constantly trying to figure them out. I guess it started a long time ago when I was one and I could not even figure myself out. Then I had teenage children and could not figure them out. One thing I think I have figured out by watching teenagers is that have a good chance at being who our friends are.

If you hang around people who like darkness, you will like it too. If you hang around people who like the light, you will too. We can hide in darkness and it may seem safe, for a while, but we stumble more in the darkness because the enemy keeps things in the darkness to make us stumble. And when we stumble, we feel weak and insecure but some still want to stay in the darkness.

But how great is the light! Even though it reveals all things, it also heals all things. That is what we all need – healing. The world is full of hurts, even some that are self-inflicted. The light heals them all, if we will live as children of light.

So how do we stay in the light? I have found it much easier if I surround myself with partners who also live in the light. It starts with family and oh do I have a great family. There are 18 of us – 2 grandparents, 6 parents and 10 grandchildren, all less than 9 years old, 7 of which are boys. So… we have plenty of opportunities to see what the light can do! All the times of frustration, fatigue, failure, fuming, fighting, fascination and flat out fun bring life to the fullest. We do our best to make the light a part of every thing we do so that even in the hard times we can see its healing and in the good times we can see its glory.

Then there are my partners at church – more light walkers. How great is it to be a part of a vibrant body that loves the light and wants others to be a part of the light too. It is so necessary for me to be a part of a smaller group, Bible fellowship, that makes studying the light so necessary to live. And then being part of an even smaller group of couples that shares how the light has brought life into everything they do. And then being part of an even smaller group of like minded guys that make sure we are all staying in the light – and will call each other out when any darkness tries to creep in.

Jesus said in John 9:5 “I am the light of the world” and He tells us in Matthew 5:16 to “let your light shine before men”. So let’s let our light shine where we are and surround ourselves with others that shine too. Then the world will see how great is the light and be drawn to… Him!
