Proverbs 10:27

27 The Fear of the Lord adds length to life,

but the years of the wicked are cut short.

Central Truth

When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we learn to Fear the Lord. When we were just children, we were taught the difference between right and wrong. As true Christians, we see that the scriptures tell us that doing what is right, or living a life that is pleasing to GOD, can result in a longer physical life here on Earth. Living a life that is evil or wicked, that does not please the Lord, can result in a shorter life.

I was born into the Methodist Church. We were in church ever time that the doors were open. I was sprinkled at the age of 6 and became a member of the church. I thought that made me a Christian. Since I was actually not a Christian at that time, I had no Fear of the Lord. I did whatever I wanted, and sometimes the things I did were kind of wicked. I had no idea that doing right, or pleasing GOD, meant I would probably live a longer life, or living a wicked life would cause me to have a shorter life.

All through school, and most of my junior college years, I told everyone that I was a Christian, but I still had no Fear of the Lord. I finally realized at the age of 20, that I had no personal relationship with Jesus; therefore I was not a Christian. When I accepted Jesus as my Lord, and Savior, and began to have a personal relation with Him, I learned to Fear the Lord. It was many years later, as a more mature Christian, that I learned the true meaning of this scripture. This verse is actually referring to our physical life here on earth, even though a life lived in Fear of the Lord does lead to an eternal life with Jesus. A wicked life, outside of Christ, may lead to a shorter physical life, but definitely leads to an eternal life in a place we call Hell.

What is the Fear of the Lord? It is a reverent love and respect for GOD that causes a person to read and obey the Bible, GOD’s word. It is also the basis for all wisdom and joy. What is wickedness? It is living a life by your own desires. It is your choice how you live. But this proverb says you may die sooner than those who Fear the Lord.

Our Creator GOD had Solomon write the secret formula for long life in this proverb. Strong people embrace this formula, while wicked people ignore it. GOD even inspires Moses in Psalm 90:10 to tell us that 70 years is typical for most people, but 80 years is typical for strong people. Strong people Fear the Lord, therefore they typically live longer lives.

We need to realize that, like all proverbs, Proverbs 10:27 is a general principle and not a promise. In other words, there are some people who Fear the Lord and die young, and there are some people who have no Fear of GOD and live long lives. However, the proverb simply observes that those who are strong Christians and fear GOD generally live longer lives than those who do not Fear the Lord.

In reality, every human life on earth is actually a short life. The Bible compares it to a vapor. It disappears before you can get your hands on it. The only true cure for death is the gift of eternal life, and it is only by the grace of GOD. After this short life on earth, true believers in Jesus Christ will live forever.
