Safety First

Safety First

Ephesians 6:12

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Central Truth

All believers must prepare daily for spiritual warfare.

For the past 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of working for Mississippi Power Company.  Due to the dangerous risks associated with our line of work, safety is a core value to our company’s culture.  As a matter of fact, “Safety First” is communicated daily as our top priority.

When an employee goes into the field to perform a task, a job safety briefing is conducted before any work is accomplished.  This is done to identify any potential hazards associated with the job and the personal protective equipment needed to keep the employee safe.  In most cases this would include a hard hat, safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, hearing protection, and protective footwear. All these items play an essential role in keeping our employees safe physically in their work environment.

In Ephesians 6:12, Paul describes a different kind of hazard. This famous verse describes the daily spiritual battle that exists in the lives of all believers. Paul affirms our battle is spiritual, not physical.  The enemies we face are not people or objects; however, the devil may use those as part of his attack.  Our true opponent is sin.  Paul identifies our spiritual enemies as Satan and his armies of demonic forces attacking believers anywhere across this world and beyond.

Much like our job safety briefings at Mississippi Power, we as believers must prepare ourselves daily for the spiritual attacks by the enemy.  One way of doing this is by choosing to use the personal protective equipment God has provided us.  Paul describes this personal protective equipment as the Armor of God.  It includes the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shield of faith, the sword of the spirit, and the sandals of peace.

The challenge for me as an employee and follower of Christ is the daily decision I must make to put on my personal protective equipment.  No one, including God, will put it on for me…’s a choice I must make.

Questions to Ponder

  • Do you take seriously the daily threat of spiritual warfare in your life?

  • Are you trying to fight the battle alone and unequipped?

  • Are you putting on your spiritual personal protective equipment daily?

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.”
