Wisdom & Discernment

Wisdom & Discernment

Proverbs 28:7

7 The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.

Central Truth

Wisdom and discernment only come from God.

There is a contrast in this verse between two sons.  The first son loves his father’s rules and seeks to follow them.  The other son brings shame to his father by disregarding his rules. It’s implied that the first son, with the wisdom and discernment that comes from keeping the law, is bringing honor to his father.  A son without wisdom and discernment brings shame to his family because he is being deceived by the greed of others.

Gluttony means to over indulge in something, whether it’s food, drink, or material items.  The greed and gluttony is a result of pride and arrogance.  It is a result of thinking he is wise in his own eyes and ignoring the counsel of the father.  This son believes he will be happier and more satisfied by over indulging in the pleasures of the world.   The son who keeps the law is the son who understands that his pleasure and joy come from loving and obeying the father.

He keeps the fathers law, not because he is trying to earn the father’s love and acceptance, but because he already knows that he has the father’s love and acceptance.  Jesus lived the life we could not live and died the death that we all deserved. He did it so we could have a relationship with God.  As we follow Jesus’ example, we gain wisdom and understanding. Do you love God’ commands, or are you trying to find pleasure in the things of the world?
